Nurturing the love for science in children: a Native Scientist workshop in Italian

We believe that children are natural scientists – their curiosity, questioning and wonder are habits of mind that need to be nurtured inside and outside their classrooms.

For this reason, as part of our learning enrichment programme, we make sure to offer our pupils plenty of opportunities to explore science, experiment with their questions, and consolidate their learning.

A few weeks ago our KS2 classes took part in a special workshop in Italian organised by Native Scientist, a non-profit enterprise that works with international scientists and teachers to promote science and language learning among school pupils.

Five Italian scientists came to our school to talk to our children about their work.

The children have explored and experimented with:
– DNA and how to extract it from strawberries
– how the brain and the human body perceive our emotions
– how human facial expressions work and how they compare to those of monkeys
– bacteria: what it is and which types are good for us, e.g. those in yoghurt
– our immune system and how to fight bacteria

That was an awesome experience! We would like to thank Native Scientist for visiting our school and taking our children on such an interesting and fun learning journey!
